Patrick and others suppose to be a contraction of ben Dan, "the son of Dan;" by which they suppose Samson is meant, as the Targum reads. The LXX, Syriac, and Arabic, however, instead of Bedan read Barak; and the two latter versions, instead of Samuel have Samson. These readings are adopted by Houbigant, and appear to be genuine; for it is not probable that Samuel would enumerate himself. 13:1-16:31 Jephthah11:1-33 Samuel1 Samuel 7:13ReciprocalJudges 2:16 - the Lord; 1 Chronicles 7:17 - Bedan; 17:6 - the judges; Nehemiah 9:27 - saviours; Hosea 13:10 - thy judges; Zechariah 1:20 - four; Acts 13:20 - he gave; Habakkuk 3:1 - Gedeon Verse 12Nahash1 Samuel 11:1, 11:2 Nay8:3, 8:5, 8:6, 8:19, 8:20; Judges 9:18, 9:56, 9:57 when the Lord1 Samuel 8:7, 10:19; Genesis 17:7; Exodus 19:5, 19:6; Numbers 23:21; Judges 8:23; Psalm 74:12; Isaiah 33:22; Hosea 13:10ReciprocalNumbers 22:20 - If the men; Judges 2:17 - they would; 8:22 - Rule thou; 1 Chronicles 19:1 - Nahash; Proverbs 24:21 - meddle; Ezekiel 16:13 - and thou didst; Acts 13:21 - they Verse 13behold1 Samuel 10:24, 11:15 whom ye8:5, 9:20 have desiredPsalm 78:29-31; Hosea 13:11; Acts 13:21ReciprocalNumbers 27:16 - set a man; 1 Samuel 2:10 - he shall; Luke 23:25 - whom Verse 14If ye willLeviticus 20:1-13; Deuteronomy 28:1-14; Joshua 24:14, 24:20; Psalm 81:12-15; Isaiah 3:10; Romans 2:7 commandmentHeb. mouthcontinueHeb. be afterReciprocalJoshua 22:18 - following; 1 Samuel 15:1 - hearken; 15:23 - rebellion; 1 Kings 6:12 - if thou wilt; Lamentations 1:18 - for I; John 8:31 - If; James 1:25 - and Verse 15But if yeLeviticus 26:14-30; Deuteronomy 28:15-68; Joshua 24:20; Isaiah 1:20, 3:11; Romans 2:8, 2:9 against1 Samuel 12:9Reciprocal5:9 - the hand; 9:20 - on whom; 15:23 - rebellion; 1 Kings 6:12 - if thou wilt; Ezra 9:7 - for our iniquities; Lamentations 1:18 - for I Verse 16stand1 Samuel 12:7, 15:16; Exodus 14:13, 14:31Reciprocal1 Samuel 12:17 - Is it; Joel 2:21 - for; Malachi 1:5 - your Verse 17Is itIn northern latitudes, thunder and rain are far from being un-common during harvest. But rain is hardly ever known in Palestine during that season, which commences about the end of June, or beginning of July. This fact is abundantly confirmed by modern travellers, and is demonstrative to every unprejudiced reader of the Holy Scriptures, that the thunder and rain, which at Samuel's invocation, was sent at this season of the year, was a miraculous interposition of the power of God; for we read in 1 Samuel 12:16, it was a "great thing which the Lord will do." Thus were the Israelites warned of their sin in having asked a king, and of the omnipotence of that God, whose gracious promises they virtually neglected by this act. This is probably the true reading; for it does not appear that Samuel went to Gibeah, which was Saul's usual residence; and the Hebrew copyist, as Dr. Wall observes, seems to have missed a line, and added to the sentence concerning Samuel, that which ended the sentence concerning Saul. One manuscript instead of Samuel, in the beginning of the sentence, reads Saul.presentHeb. foundabout six1 Samuel 13:2, 13:6, 13:7, 14:2ReciprocalJoshua 18:28 - Gibeath; 1 Samuel 11:8 - the children; 15:4 - two; 19:13 - a pillow; 2 Kings 13:7 - fifty horsemen Verse 16GibeahHeb. It is, according to the Linnean system, a genus of the icosandria monogynia class of plants; and is a low tree, growing very common in Palestine, and other parts of the East. It has several small angular boughs, very thick and bushy, covered with a reddish bark, and some of them armed with sharp thorns. They are garnished with small, narrow, spear-shaped leaves, like those of the myrtle, but not so sharp, of a green colour, inclining to red. Its blossoms are large, beautiful, of an elegant red colour, inclining to purple, composed of several stalks resembling a rose, in the hollow of the cup: this cup is oblong, hard, purple, having a figure somewhat like that of a bell. It is chiefly valued for its fruit, which is exceedingly beautiful, of the form and size of a large apple, with a reddish rind, and red within; being full of small kernels, with red grains, replenished with a generous liquor, of which, Sir John Chardin informs us, they still make considerable quantities of wine in the East, particularly in Persia. But as the pomegranate tree, from its low growth, is but little adapted for pitching a tent under, it is probable that Rimmon here is the name of the rock mentioned in Judges 20:45.Reciprocal1 Samuel 11:4 - to Gibeah; 1 Kings 20:15 - seven thousand; 20:27 - like two Verse 3Ahiah1 Samuel 22:9-12, 22:20, called Ahimelech.Ichabod's4:21 wearing2:28; Exodus 28:26-32Reciprocal1 Samuel 2:31 - I will cut; 21:1 - to Ahimelech; 23:6 - an ephod; 1 Chronicles 6:7 - Ahitub; Hosea 3:4 - ephod Verse 4the passages1 Samuel 13:23Reciprocal14:5 - forefront; Job 39:28 - upon; Isaiah 10:29 - the passage Verse 5forefrontHeb. tooth, 1 Samuel 14:4, Bozez, i.e. shining, Seneh, i.e. a bush or toothReciprocal13:2 - Michmash; 13:11 - Michmash; 13:23 - passage; 1 Chronicles 3:6 - Eliphelet; Isaiah 10:28 - Michmash Verse 6ComeThis action of Jonathan's was totally contrary to the laws of war; no military operation should be undertaken without the knowledge and command of the general. These memorial pillars were anciently much in use; and the figure of a hand, by its emblematical meaning, was well adapted to preserve the remembrance of a victory. Niebuhr, speaking of the Mesjed Ali, or Mosque of Ali, says that, "at the top of the dome, where one generally sees on the Turkish mosques a crescent, or only a pole, there is here a hand stretched out, to represent that of Ali." Another writer informs us, that at the Alhamra, or red palace of the Moorish kings in Grenada, "on the key-stone of the outward arch (of the present principal entrance) is sculptured the figure of an arm, the symbol of strength and dominion."ReciprocalNumbers 31:13 - went forth; but it should be remarked, that what Samuel did here, he did in his magisterial capacity; and that Agag had been a cruel tyrant, and therefore was cut off for his merciless cruelties. Farther, it is not likely that he did it by his own sword, but by that of the executioner. and the answer which he was instructed to return was strictly true though he did not tell the principal design of his coming; for though no man in any circumstances should tell a lie, yet, in all circumstances, he is not bound to tell the whole truth, though he must tell nothing but the truth, and so tell that truth that the hearer shall not believe a lie by it.with theeHeb. in thine hand, 1 Samuel 9:12 I am come9:12, 20:29; That Saul had fallen into a deep melancholy, there is little doubt; and that an evil spirit might work more effectually on such a state of mind, there can be little question. His malady appears to have been of a mixed kind, natural and diabolical: there is too much of apparent nature in it to permit us to believe it was all spiritual; and there is too much of apparently supernatural influence, to suffer us to believe it was all natural. 1 Samuel 18:10, 19:9, 19:10; Judges 9:23; 1 Kings 22:22; Acts 19:15, 19:16 troubledor, terrifiedReciprocalNumbers 27:18 - a man; Deuteronomy 28:28 - General; Judges 6:34 - the Spirit; 16:20 - the Lord; 1 Samuel 16:23 - the evil spirit; 17:31 - sent for him; 26:19 - stirred; 2 Samuel 7:15 - as I took; Psalm 36:3 - he hath Verse 15Reciprocal1 Samuel 16:1 - seeing; 18:10 - the evil spirit Verse 16before thee1 Samuel 16:21, 16:22; Genesis 41:46; 1 Kings 10:8 play1 Samuel 16:23, 10:5; 2 Kings 3:15Reciprocal1 Samuel 18:10 - played; 2 Samuel 6:5 - David Verse 18a mighty1 Samuel 17:32-36; 2 Samuel 17:8, 17:10 and prudent14:20 mattersor, speech.a comely1 Samuel 16:12 the Lord3:19, 10:7, 18:12-14; Genesis 39:2, 39:23; Matthew 1:23, 28:20ReciprocalNumbers 27:18 - a man; 1 Samuel 16:13 - the Spirit; 17:12 - David; 17:31 - sent for him; 17:58 - I am the son; 18:14 - the Lord; 1 Chronicles 9:20 - the Lord; Psalm 89:19 - I have laid; 131:1 - my heart; Proverbs 12:8 - commended; Haggai 2:4 - for; Zechariah 10:5 - as; Luke 1:66 - And the; John 7:42 - where Verse 19with the sheep1 Samuel 16:11, 17:15, 17:33, 17:34; Exodus 3:1-10; 1 Kings 19:19; Psalm 78:70-72, 113:8; Amos 1:1, 7:14, 7:15; Matthew 4:18-22Reciprocal1 Samuel 17:58 - I am the son Verse 20an ass ladenChamor lechem, literally, "an ass of bread," rendered by the LXX γομορ αρτων, a gomor of bread; meaning, probably, not an animal, but a vessel containing a certain measure of bread. 1 Samuel 10:27, 17:18, 25:18; Genesis 43:11; 2 Samuel 16:1, 16:2; Proverbs 18:16ReciprocalGenesis 27:9 - two Verse 21stood before himGenesis 41:46; Deuteronomy 1:38, 10:8; 1 Kings 10:8; Proverbs 22:29 loved himPsalm 62:9, 118:9, 146:3Reciprocal1 Samuel 16:16 - before thee; 17:55 - whose son; 18:2 - took him; 19:7 - in times past; 1 Kings 1:2 - a young virgin Verse 22ReciprocalGenesis 30:27 - favour; 39:4 - Joseph; Deuteronomy 1:38 - which standeth; 1 Samuel 16:16 - before thee; 17:55 - whose son; 1 Kings 1:2 - a young virgin; Psalm 131:1 - my heart; Daniel 1:5 - stand Verse 23the evil spirit1 Samuel 16:14, 16:16 Saul18:10, 18:11; Matthew 12:43-45; Luke 11:24-26Reciprocal2 Kings 3:15 - bring me; 1 Chronicles 13:8 - with harps
