1 Samuel 11
Overview
11:1 Nahash offers them of Jabesh-gilead a reproachful condition;
11:4 They send messengers, and are delivered by Saul;
11:12 Saul thereby is confirmed, and his kingdom renewed. Verse 1NahashIn the Vulgate this chapter begins thus: Et factum est quasi post mensem, "And it came to pass about a month after;" which is also the reading of the principal copies of the Septuagint; and is also found in Josephus, though it appears to be of little authority. 1 Samuel 12:12; Judges 10:7, 11:8-33 Jabeshgilead1 Samuel 31:11-13; Judges 21:8, 10-25 MakeGenesis 26:28; Exodus 23:32; Deuteronomy 23:3; 1 Kings 20:34; Job 41:4; Isaiah 36:16; Ezekiel 17:13ReciprocalGenesis 19:38 - children; 1 Samuel 17:9 - and serve us; 2 Samuel 10:1 - king; 10:2 - Nahash; 17:27 - the son of Nahash; 1 Chronicles 10:11 - when; 19:1 - Nahash; 2 Chronicles 26:8 - the Ammonites; Jeremiah 40:14 - Ammonites; 49:1 - their king; Amos 1:13 - and for Verse 2On this2 Kings 18:31 thrustJudges 16:21; Exodus 3:6; Proverbs 12:10; Jeremiah 39:7 reproach1 Samuel 17:26; Genesis 34:14Reciprocal1 Samuel 11:10 - To morrow; 11:11 - slew; 12:12 - Nahash; 1 Chronicles 19:1 - Nahash; Nehemiah 2:17 - a reproach; 4:7 - the Ammonites; Amos 1:13 - and for Verse 3Give usHeb. An eminent Scotch writer describes the rites, incantations, and imprecations used prior to the fiery cross being circulated, to summon the rough warriors of ancient times to the service of their chief; and he alludes to this ancient custom, which in comparatively modern times, has been practised in Scotland; and proves that a similar punishment of death, or destruction of their houses, for disobeying the summons, was inflicted by the ancient Scandinavians, as recorded by Olaus Magnus, in his History of the Goths. This bears a striking similarity to the ancient custom of the Israelites. With the Highlanders, a goat was slain; with the Israelites, an ox. The exhibition of a cross, stained with the blood of the sacrificed animal, was the summons of the former, while part of the animal, was the mandate of the latter. Disobedience in one nation was punished with the death of themselves or oxen, and burning of their dwellings in the other.hewed19:29 Whosoever21:5-11 the fearGenesis 35:5; 2 Chronicles 14:14, 17:10 with one consentHeb. as one man, Judges 20:1Reciprocal11:5 - to fetch; 21:10 - Go and smite; Ezra 10:8 - And that whosoever Verse 8BezekJudges 1:4, 1:5 the children1 Samuel 13:15, 15:4; 2 Samuel 24:9; 2 Chronicles 17:12-19ReciprocalJudges 20:1 - as one man; 20:17 - four hundred; 2 Kings 3:6 - numbered Verse 9helpor, deliverance, Psalm 18:17ReciprocalJoshua 10:9 - all night; 11:6 - morrow; 2 Kings 7:1 - To morrow; Proverbs 27:17 - so Verse 10To morrow1 Samuel 11:2, 11:3ReciprocalProverbs 27:17 - so Verse 11on the morrowGenesis 22:14; Psalm 46:1 in threeJudges 7:16, 9:43 morningExodus 14:24 slew1 Samuel 11:2; Judges 1:7; Matthew 7:2; James 2:13 so that two1 Samuel 30:17, 30:18; Judges 4:16Reciprocal1 Samuel 13:17 - in three companies; 14:36 - let us not leave; 14:47 - Ammon; 25:34 - hasted; Mark 6:48 - the fourth Verse 12Who is he1 Samuel 10:27; Psalm 21:8; Luke 19:27ReciprocalJoshua 1:18 - that doth rebel; Judges 11:5 - to fetch Verse 13There shall1 Samuel 14:45; 2 Samuel 19:22 the Lord1 Samuel 19:5; Exodus 14:13, 14:30; Psalm 44:4-8; Isaiah 59:16; 1 Corinthians 15:10Reciprocal2 Samuel 23:10 - the Lord; Isaiah 26:18 - we have not; Matthew 13:20 - anon Verse 14let us go1 Samuel 7:16, 10:8 renew10:24, 5:3; 1 Chronicles 12:38, 12:39ReciprocalJoshua 4:19 - Gilgal; 10:43 - unto the camp; 1 Samuel 12:1 - have made; 13:4 - to Gilgal; 2 Samuel 19:15 - Gilgal; 1 Kings 1:25 - slain Verse 15before the Lord1 Samuel 10:17 sacrificed10:8; Exodus 24:5; 1 Chronicles 29:21-24 rejoiced greatly1 Samuel 8:19, 12:13-15, 12:17; Hosea 13:10, 13:11; James 4:16ReciprocalGenesis 31:46 - an heap; Joshua 4:19 - Gilgal; Judges 11:11 - before; 1 Samuel 7:17 - he built; 13:4 - to Gilgal; 31:6 - General; 2 Samuel 5:3 - made; 19:15 - Gilgal; 1 Kings 1:25 - slain; 1:40 - rejoiced; 2 Kings 10:3 - Look even; 21:24 - made Josiah; 1 Chronicles 11:3 - David made; Acts 13:21 - Saul
