2 Samuel 9
Overview
9:1 David by Ziba sends for Mephibosheth;
9:7 For Jonathan's sake he entertains him at his table, and restores him all that was Saul's;
9:9 He makes Ziba his farmer. Verse 3the kindness of GodThat is, the highest degree of kindness; as the hail of God is very great hail; the mountains of God exceeding high mountains; besides which, this kindness was according to the covenant of God made between him and Jonathan. Sir John Chardin understands those passages which speak of a right to eat at the royal table, as pointing out a right to a seat there, when the repast was public and solemn. So in a manuscript Note on 1 Kings 2:7, he tells us that it was to be understood of the majilis, - the term for an assembly of lords, or a public feast
and not of the daily and ordinary repast. Hence, though Mephibosheth was to eat at all public times at the king's table, yet he would want the produce of his lands for food at other times, which it was necessary for Ziba to understand. 2 Samuel 9:7, 9:11-13, 19:28; 2 Kings 25:29; Luke 14:15Reciprocal2 Samuel 9:13 - he did eat; 16:3 - where is; 19:17 - Ziba; 21:7 - Mephibosheth; 1 Chronicles 8:34 - Meribbaal; Jeremiah 52:34 - there was; Luke 22:30 - eat

The beard was never cut off but in mourning, or as a sign of slavery. It is customary to shave the Ottoman princes, as a mark of their subjection to the reigning emperor. The beard is a mark of authority and liberty among the Mohammedans. The Persians who clip the beard, and shave above the jaw, are reputed heretics. They who serve in the seraglios have their beards shaven, as a sign of servitude; nor do they suffer them to grow till the sultan has set them at liberty. Among the Arabians, it is more infamous for anyone to appear with his beard cut off, than among us to be publicly whipped or branded; and many would prefer death to such a punishment. Ye fight pro aris et focis; for every good, sacred and civil; for God, for your families, and for your countries. Such harangues, especially in very trying circumstances, are very natural, and may perhaps be found in the records of every nation. Several instances might be quoted from Roman and Grecian history; but few are more remarkable than that of Tyrtaeus, the lame Athenian poet, to whom the command of the army was given in one of the Messenian wars. The Spartans had at that time suffered great losses, and all their stratagems proved ineffectual, so that they began to despair of success; when the poet, by his lectures on honour and courage, delivered in moving verse to the army, ravished them to such a degree with the thoughts of dying for their country, that, rushing on with a furious transport to meet their enemies, they gave them an entire overthrow, and by one decisive battle brought the war to a happy conclusion. In another part of his works he says, that as soon as spring was begun, Adad levied and led forth his army against the Hebrews. Antiochus also prepared to invade Judea at the first appearance of spring; and Vespasian marched to Antipatris at the commencement of the same season. The kings and armies of the East, says Chardin, do not march but when there is grass, and when they can encamp, which is in April. This rule, however, seems to be disregarded in modern times.David sent1 Chronicles 20:1; Zechariah 14:3 Rabbah2 Samuel 12:26; Deuteronomy 3:11; 1 Chronicles 20:1; Ezekiel 21:20ReciprocalJoshua 13:25 - Rabbah; 1 Samuel 18:30 - went forth; 2 Samuel 12:27 - Rabbah; Psalm 60:9 - strong city; Jeremiah 49:2 - her daughters Verse 2arose from2 Samuel 4:5, 4:7; Proverbs 19:15, 24:33, 24:34; Matthew 26:40, 26:41; 1 Thessalonians 5:6, 5:7; 1 Peter 4:7 the roof ofDeuteronomy 22:8; Jeremiah 19:13; Matthew 10:27; Acts 10:9 he sawGenesis 3:6, 6:2, 34:2; Job 31:1; Psalm 119:37; Matthew 5:28; 1 John 2:16 very beautifulGenesis 39:6; Proverbs 6:25, 31:30ReciprocalGenesis 12:11 - a fair; 38:2 - saw; Exodus 20:17 - wife; Joshua 2:6 - to the roof; 7:21 - I saw; Judges 14:1 - Timnath; 16:27 - the roof; 1 Samuel 9:25 - the top; 2 Samuel 13:1 - a fair sister; 16:22 - the top; Nehemiah 8:16 - the roof; Job 20:14 - his meat; Psalm 51:1 - after; 101:3 - set; 119:67 - Before; 139:3 - my path; Proverbs 7:8 - General; 23:31 - General; Ecclesiastes 11:9 - in the sight; Jeremiah 5:8 - every one; Ezekiel 23:16 - as soon as she saw them with her eyes; Luke 5:19 - housetop; Romans 7:7 - Thou shalt; Galatians 6:1 - overtaken; James 1:14 - when; 2 Peter 2:14 - eyes Verse 3sentJeremiah 5:8; Hosea 7:6, 7:7; James 1:14, 1:15 Bathshebaor, Bath-shuaEliamor, Ammiel, 1 Chronicles 3:5 Uriah2 Samuel 23:39; 1 Chronicles 11:41ReciprocalGenesis 10:15 - Heth; Leviticus 18:20 - General; 2 Samuel 12:3 - one little; 12:4 - took the; 23:34 - Eliam; Psalm 101:3 - set; Proverbs 6:29 - he that; 7:8 - General; Matthew 1:6 - her Verse 4sent messengersGenesis 39:7; Job 31:9-11; Psalm 50:18 he lay51:1 *title James 1:14, 1:15 she wasetc. or, and when she had purified herself, etc. she returned. This was the greatest treachery and villany on the part of David; while Joab appears to enter as fully upon the execution of the murder, being perhaps pleased to have this opportunity of further enthralling his king, and thus increasing his own power. 1 Kings 21:8-10; Psalm 19:13, 52:2, 62:9; Jeremiah 9:1-4, 17:9; Micah 7:3-5ReciprocalGenesis 37:27 - let not; 2 Samuel 12:9 - despised; 14:19 - of Joab; 1 Kings 21:14 - Naboth is stoned; Job 24:14 - murderer Verse 15Set ye2 Samuel 11:17; 1 Samuel 18:17, 18:21, 18:25; Psalm 51:4, 51:14; Jeremiah 20:13 hottestHeb. strongfrom himHeb. from after himand die2 Samuel 12:9ReciprocalDeuteronomy 27:24 - General; 2 Samuel 12:12 - secretly; 13:28 - commanded; 14:19 - of Joab; 16:7 - bloody man; 1 Kings 15:5 - save only; 21:8 - she wrote; 1 Chronicles 21:6 - Joab Verse 16he assigned2 Samuel 11:21, 3:27, 20:9, 20:10; 1 Samuel 22:17-19; 1 Kings 2:5, 2:31-34, 21:12-14; 2 Kings 10:6; Proverbs 29:12; Hosea 5:11; Acts 5:29Reciprocal1 Chronicles 20:1 - Joab smote Verse 17there fell2 Samuel 12:9; Psalm 51:14Reciprocal2 Samuel 11:15 - Set ye Verse 18Reciprocal2 Kings 10:8 - there came Verse 21AbimelechJudges 9:53 Jerubbesheth6:32, 7:1, JerubbaalThy servant2 Samuel 3:27, 3:34; Psalm 39:8; Isaiah 14:10; Ezekiel 16:51, 16:52Reciprocal1 Samuel 26:6 - Hittite; 2 Samuel 11:16 - he assigned Verse 24ReciprocalNumbers 21:30 - have shot; 1 Samuel 26:6 - Hittite Verse 25displease theeHeb. be evil in thine eyesfor the swordJoshua 7:8, 7:9; 1 Samuel 6:9; Ecclesiastes 9:1-3, 9:11, 9:12 oneHeb. so and such, What abominable hypocrisy was here! Its bent is evident; and it was wisely constructed, by not having too near a resemblance, to make David unwittingly pass sentence on himself. The parable was in David's hand what his own letter was in the hands of the brave Uriah. Nathan at length closed in with him in the application of it. In beginning with a parable he shewed his prudence, and great need there is of prudence in giving reproof; but now he speaks as an ambassador from God. He reminds David of the great things God had designed and done for him, and then charges him with a high contempt of the Divine authority, and threatens an entail of judgments upon his family for this sin. Those who despise the word and law of God, despise God himself, and will assuredly suffer for such contempt. 2 Samuel 14:5-11; Judges 9:7-15; 1 Kings 20:35-41; Isaiah 5:1-7; Matthew 21:33-45; Luke 15:11-32, 16:19-31ReciprocalJudges 3:20 - I have; 2 Samuel 5:14 - Nathan; 7:2 - Nathan; 12:25 - Nathan; 1 Kings 1:8 - Nathan; 1:10 - General; 4:5 - son of Nathan; 20:39 - Thy servant; 2 Kings 14:9 - The thistle; 1 Chronicles 3:5 - Nathan; 14:4 - Nathan; 17:1 - Nathan; 29:29 - Nathan; 2 Chronicles 9:29 - Nathan; 25:7 - a man of God; 25:15 - a prophet; 29:25 - Nathan; Psalm 32:3 - When; Isaiah 39:3 - came Isaiah; Jeremiah 22:1 - Go; Ezekiel 17:2 - General; Zechariah 12:12 - Nathan; Matthew 13:3 - in; Galatians 6:1 - restore Verse 2exceeding2 Samuel 12:8, 3:2-5, 5:13-16, 15:16; Job 1:3

It is sometimes mentioned as belonging to Arabia, sometimes to Coelo-Syria; and was one of the cities of the Decapolis east of Jordan. Josephus extends the region of Perea as far as Philadelphia. It is now, says Burckhardt, called Amman, distant about 19 miles to the se by e of Szalt, and lies along the banks of a river called Moiet Amman, which has its source in a pond, at a few hundred paces from the south-western end of the town, and empties itself in the Zerka, or Jabbok, about four hours to the northward. This river runs in a valley bordered on both sides by barren hills of flint, which advance on the south side close to the edge of the stream. The edifices which still remain, though in a decaying state, from being built of a calcareous stone of moderate hardness, sufficiently attest the former greatness and splendour of this metropolis of the children of Ammon.ReciprocalDeuteronomy 3:11 - Rabbath; Joshua 10:2 - the royal cities; 13:25 - Rabbah; 2 Samuel 8:12 - Syria; 11:1 - Rabbah; Psalm 60:9 - strong city; Ezekiel 21:20 - Rabbath; 25:4 - men; 25:5 - Rabbah; Amos 1:14 - Rabbah Verse 27Rabbah2 Samuel 11:1; Deuteronomy 3:11; Ezekiel 21:20 the city of watersProbably that part of the city situated near the pond, from which the rest received their water.ReciprocalJeremiah 49:2 - her daughters Verse 28it be called after my nameHeb. my name be called upon it, John 7:18Reciprocal2 Samuel 17:11 - in thine Verse 29Reciprocal2 Samuel 17:27 - the son of Nahash Verse 30took1 Chronicles 20:2 the weightIf this talent was only seven pounds, as Whiston says, David might have carried it on his head with little difficulty; but this weight, according to common computation, would amount to nearly 114 pounds! Some, therefore, think, that mishkelah should be taken for its value, not weight; which renders it perfectly plain, as the worth of the crown will be about 5,074, 15s, 7d sterling. The ancients mention several such large crowns, made more for sight than use. Atheneus describes a crown of gold that was 24 feet in circumference; and mentions others that were two, some four, and others five feet deep. Pliny takes notice of some that were no less than eight pounds weight. Besides the crown usually worn, it was customary for kings, in some nations, to have such large ones as described, either hung or supported over the throne, where they sat at their coronation or other solemn occasions.in great abundanceHeb. very greatReciprocal2 Samuel 1:10 - crown; 17:27 - the son of Nahash; 2 Kings 11:12 - put the crown; Psalm 21:3 - settest Verse 31and put themRather, as the particle בfrequently signifies, "And he put them to saws, and to harrows, and to axes," etc., as we say, to put a person to the plough, to the anvil, to the last, etc. 1 Chronicles 20:3, Also, 2 Samuel 8:2; Psalm 21:8, 21:9; Amos 1:3ReciprocalGenesis 11:3 - brick; Deuteronomy 23:6 - Thou shalt; 1 Samuel 14:44 - thou shalt; 2 Chronicles 16:10 - the same time; 25:12 - cast them; Proverbs 20:26 - bringeth; Jeremiah 43:9 - in the brickkiln Verse 1 amAbsalom2 Samuel 3:2, 3:3; 1 Chronicles 3:2 a fair sister2 Samuel 11:2; Genesis 6:2, 39:6, 39:7; Proverbs 6:25, 31:30 Tamar2 Samuel 14:27; 1 Chronicles 3:9 loved her2 Samuel 13:15; Genesis 29:18, 29:20, 34:3; 1 Kings 11:1ReciprocalDeuteronomy 27:22 - General; 2 Samuel 12:11 - I will raise; 1 Chronicles 3:1 - Amnon; Psalm 118:18 - chastened; Proverbs 17:25 - General; 19:13 - foolish; Song of Songs 2:5 - for; Ezekiel 22:11 - his sister Verse 2vexed1 Kings 21:4; Song of Songs 5:8; 2 Corinthians 7:10 Amnonetc. Heb. it was marvellous, or hidden, in the eyes of AmnonReciprocalSong of Songs 2:5 - for Verse 3a friendGenesis 38:1, 38:20; Judges 14:20; Esther 5:10, 5:14, 6:13; Proverbs 19:6 Shimeah2 Samuel 13:32; 1 Samuel 16:9 Shimeahsubtil man, 2 Samuel 14:2, 14:19, 14:20; Genesis 3:1; Jeremiah 4:22; 1 Corinthians 3:19; James 3:15Reciprocal1 Samuel 17:13 - Shammah; 1 Chronicles 27:32 - uncle; Luke 16:8 - done Verse 4Why art1 Kings 21:7; Esther 5:13, 5:14; Luke 12:32 leanHeb. thinfrom day to dayHeb. morning by morning, I love. This will receive illustration from the account which Mr. Jackson gives of the Arabian manner of kneading and baking. "They have a small place built with clay, between two and three feet high, having a hole at the bottom for the convenience of drawing out the ashes, something similar to that of a brick-kiln. The oven is usually about fifteen inches wide at top, and gradually grows wider to the bottom. It is heated with wood; and when sufficiently hot, and perfectly clear from smoke, having nothing but clear embers at bottom, which continue to reflect great heat, they prepare the dough in a large bowl, and mould the cakes to the desired size on a board or stone placed near the oven. After they have kneaded the cake to a proper consistency, they pat it a little, then toss it about with great dexterity in one hand till it is as thin as they choose to make it. They then wet one side of it with water, at the same time wetting the hand and arm with which they put it into the oven." 2 Samuel 13:8ReciprocalDeuteronomy 27:22 - General; 1 Chronicles 15:1 - houses Verse 9And AmnonGenesis 45:1; Judges 3:19; John 3:20

Verse 2to TekoahTekoah was a city of Judah, situated, according to Eusebius and Jerome, twelve miles south of Jerusalem. Josephus says it was not far from the castle of Herodium; and Jerome (Prologue to Amos ) says it stood on a hill six miles south from Bethlehem. Dr. Poccocke places it at the same distance; and says there are still considerable ruins on the top of a hill, which is about half a mile long and a furlong broad. 2 Chronicles 11:6, 20:20; Nehemiah 3:5, 3:27; Jeremiah 6:1; Amos 1:1, Tekoamourning2 Samuel 11:26; Ruth 3:3; Psalm 104:15; Ecclesiastes 9:8; Matthew 6:17ReciprocalGenesis 38:19 - laid by her veil; 2 Samuel 13:3 - Shimeah; 20:16 - General; 23:26 - Tekoite; 1 Kings 14:2 - disguise thyself; 20:31 - put sackcloth; 20:38 - disguised; 22:30 - disguised himself; 1 Chronicles 2:24 - Tekoa; Luke 7:46 - General; 20:20 - feign Verse 3put the words2 Samuel 14:19; Exodus 4:15; Numbers 23:5; Deuteronomy 18:18; Isaiah 51:16, 59:21; Jeremiah 1:9ReciprocalDeuteronomy 31:19 - put it in their; Ezra 8:17 - I told them Verse 4fell on her2 Samuel 1:2; 1 Samuel 20:41, 25:23 HelpHeb. No one can prevent the execution of Saheb's commands. Saheb is God." Though the expression may be imputed to the hyperbolical genius of these countries, yet there was, perhaps, more of real persuasion than we are apt to suppose. Sir John Chardin states, that having found fault with the king of Persia's valuation of a rich trinket, the grand master told him that if a Persian had dared to have done such a thing, it would have been as much as his life was worth. "Know," said he, "that the kings of Persia have a general and full knowledge of matters, as sure as it is extensive; and that, equally in the greatest and smallest things, there is nothing more just and sure than what they pronounce." 2 Samuel 14:20, 19:27; 1 Samuel 29:9; Proverbs 27:21, 29:5 to discernHeb. to hear, 1 Kings 3:9, 3:28; Job 6:30; 1 Corinthians 2:14, 2:15 *marg. But it is probable that the king's shekel was that which Epiphanius and Hesychius say was the fourth part of an ounce, half a stater, or two drachmas: the whole amount, therefore, of the 200 shekels is about 50 ounces, which make 4 lb. 2 oz. troy weight, or 3 lb. 2 oz. avoirdupois. This need not be accounted incredible, especially as abundance of oil and ointment was used by the ancients in dressing their heads. Josephus informs us, that the Jews also put gold dust in their hair. Two of those collated by Dr. Kennicott, however, have yom, "day," instead of shanah, "year," i.e., forty days instead of forty years; but this is not sufficient to outweigh the other authorities. 2 Samuel 13:38; 1 Samuel 16:1, 16:13 let me go2 Samuel 13:24-27 pay1 Samuel 16:2; Proverbs 21:27; Isaiah 58:4; Matthew 2:8, 23:14ReciprocalGenesis 34:14 - uncircumcised; Numbers 21:2 - vowed; Joshua 21:11 - is Hebron; 2 Samuel 2:1 - Hebron; Psalm 109:7 - and let; Proverbs 7:14 - this; Jonah 2:9 - I will pay Verse 8thy servantGenesis 28:20, 28:21; 1 Samuel 1:11, 16:2; Psalm 56:12; Ecclesiastes 5:4 Geshur2 Samuel 13:37, 13:38, 14:23, 14:32 I will serveJoshua 24:15; Isaiah 28:15; Jeremiah 9:3-5, 42:20ReciprocalNumbers 21:2 - vowed; Joshua 12:5 - unto the; 13:2 - Geshuri; 1 Samuel 27:8 - the Geshurites; 1 Chronicles 3:2 - Geshur; Psalm 109:7 - and let; Ezekiel 27:16 - Syria Verse 9ReciprocalJoshua 10:36 - Hebron; 1 Samuel 25:35 - Go up Verse 10spies2 Samuel 13:28, 14:30 reigneth19:10; Job 20:5-29; Psalm 73:18, 73:19 Hebron2 Samuel 2:1, 2:11, 3:2, 3:3, 5:5; 1 Chronicles 11:3, 12:23, 12:38ReciprocalJoshua 10:36 - Hebron; 1 Samuel 30:31 - Hebron; 2 Samuel 12:11 - I will raise; 20:1 - he blew; 22:19 - prevented; 1 Kings 1:18 - Adonijah; 1:34 - blow ye; 2 Kings 9:13 - blew with trumpets; 1 Chronicles 11:1 - Hebron; Nehemiah 6:7 - a king; Psalm 37:12 - General; 55:20 - broken; Micah 7:6 - son Verse 11called1 Samuel 9:13, 16:3-5 their simplicityGenesis 20:5; 1 Samuel 22:15; Proverbs 14:15, 22:3; Matthew 10:16; Romans 16:18, 16:19Reciprocal1 Kings 1:9 - called; 22:34 - at a venture; 2 Chronicles 18:33 - at a venture Verse 12Ahithophel2 Samuel 15:31, 16:20-23, 17:14, 17:23 David'sPsalm 41:9, 55:12-14; Micah 7:5, 7:6; John 13:18 GilohJoshua 15:51 while he offeredNumbers 23:1, 23:14, 23:30; 1 Kings 21:9, 21:12; Psalm 50:16-21; Proverbs 21:27; Isaiah 1:10-16; Titus 1:16 the peoplePsalm 3:1, 3:2, 43:1, 43:2Reciprocal2 Samuel 16:23 - both; 19:10 - whom; 1 Kings 1:7 - And he conferred; 1:9 - slew; 1 Chronicles 27:33 - Ahithophel; Psalm 4:5 - Offer; 55:13 - my guide; 109:3 - fought; 109:5 - hatred; Proverbs 17:11 - General; Ecclesiastes 4:16 - no end; Acts 23:13 - which Verse 13The hearts2 Samuel 15:6, 3:36; Judges 9:3; Psalm 62:9; Matthew 21:9, 27:22Reciprocal2 Samuel 19:10 - whom; 1 Kings 2:7 - when I fled; 2:15 - Thou knowest; 12:16 - So Israel; 2 Chronicles 10:16 - So all Israel; Job 1:14 - messenger; Proverbs 24:21 - meddle; Ecclesiastes 4:16 - no end Verse 14Arise2 Samuel 19:9; Psalm 3:1 *titlebringHeb. thrust, Ezekiel 46:18; Matthew 11:12 *marg. Verse 23all the countryRomans 12:15 the brookThe brook Kidron, which is but a few paces broad, runs along the valley of Jehoshaphat, east of Jerusalem, to the south-west corner of the city, and then, turning to the south-east, empties itself into the Dead Sea. Like the Ilissus, it is dry at least nine months in the year, being only furnished with water in the winter, and after heavy rains: its bed is narrow and deep, which indicates that it must formerly have been the channel for waters which have found some other, and probably subterraneous course.Kidron1 Kings 2:37; John 18:1, Cedronthe wilderness2 Samuel 16:2; Matthew 3:1, 3:3; Luke 1:80Reciprocal2 Samuel 15:28 - General; 1 Kings 15:13 - the brook; 2 Kings 23:4 - Kidron; 2 Chronicles 30:14 - the brook; Nehemiah 2:15 - the brook; Isaiah 15:5 - with; Jeremiah 31:40 - the brook Verse 24Zadok2 Samuel 15:27, 15:35, 8:17, 20:25; 1 Kings 1:8, 2:35, 4:2-4; 1 Chronicles 6:8-12; Ezekiel 48:11 bearing2 Samuel 6:13; Numbers 4:15, 7:9; Joshua 3:3, 3:6, 3:15-17, 4:16-18, 6:4, 6:6; 1 Samuel 4:3-5, 4:11; 1 Chronicles 15:2Reciprocal1 Samuel 14:18 - Bring hither; 1 Kings 1:7 - Abiathar; 2:26 - barest; 1 Chronicles 6:53 - Zadok; 15:11 - Zadok; Psalm 119:99 - than all; Mark 2:26 - Abiathar Verse 25Carry back2 Samuel 12:10, 12:11; 1 Samuel 4:3-11; Jeremiah 7:4 he will bringPsalm 26:8, 27:4, 27:5, 42:1, 42:2, 43:3, 43:4, 63:1, 63:2, 84:1-3, 84:10, 122:1, 122:9; Isaiah 38:22 habitation2 Samuel 6:17, 7:2ReciprocalNumbers 14:8 - delight; 1 Samuel 22:3 - till I know; 2 Chronicles 9:8 - which delighted; Psalm 131:2 - quieted; Ecclesiastes 9:1 - that the; Daniel 9:25 - restore and to build Jerusalem; Jonah 4:8 - and wished; Acts 21:14 - The will; James 4:15 - If Verse 26 I2 Samuel 22:20; Numbers 14:8; 1 Kings 10:9; 2 Chronicles 9:8; Isaiah 42:1, 62:4; Jeremiah 22:28, 32:41; Matthew 1:10 letJudges 10:15; 1 Samuel 3:18; Job 1:20, 1:21; Psalm 39:9Reciprocal1 Samuel 22:3 - till I know; 1 Chronicles 19:13 - let the Lord; Psalm 89:38 - wroth; 131:2 - quieted; Ecclesiastes 9:1 - that the; Isaiah 39:8 - Good; Jeremiah 26:14 - as seemeth good and meet unto you; Jonah 4:8 - and wished; Matthew 26:39 - not; Acts 9:10 - Behold; 21:14 - The will; James 4:7 - Submit; 4:15 - If Verse 27a seer2 Samuel 24:11; 1 Samuel 9:9; 1 Chronicles 25:5 return2 Samuel 15:34, 15:36, 17:17Reciprocal15:24 - Zadok; 1 Chronicles 6:8 - Ahimaaz Verse 282 Samuel 15:23, 16:2, 17:1, 17:16

Josephus says it is five stadia, i.e., 625 geometrical paces from Jerusalem; and St. Luke - 1:12 says it is a Sabbath day's journey, or about eight stadia distant, i.e., to the summit. It forms part of a ridge of limestone hills, extending from north to south for about a mile; and it is described as having three, or, according to others, four summits; the central and highest of which overlooks the whole of the city, over whose streets and walls the eye roves as if in the survey of a model.and wept as he went upHeb. going up and weeping, Psalm 42:3-11, 43:1, 43:2, 43:5; Luke 19:41 his head coveredThis custom was only practised by persons in great distress, or when convicted of great crimes.
